The composition of ER 309 L welding rod is the same as ER-309 welding rod, except for the carbon content. The low carbon content in the filler metal (0.03 maximum) decreases the possibility of carbide precipitation and thus increases resistance to intergranular corrosion without the use of stabilisers such as columbium and titanium. These low-carbon alloys may not, however, be as resistant to high temperatures as columbium-stabilised alloys or ER-309.
